The nature of manufacturing is changing and it is increasingly a priority in the developed world to support more advanced manufacturing sectors, and those needing higher skills, greater levels of innovation and activity across the value chain. The Leeds City Region recognised that there was no agreed definition of advanced manufacturing, and little information on the size and characteristics of the sector, including its value chain, so support from the LEP could not be readily targeted. As a result, it commissioned this work to fill these knowledge and policy gaps.
